Helping your cat stay healthy

 Helping your cat stay healthy

To keep your cat healthy most of the time, all you really need to do is provide good shelter, food and plenty of water.  However, like other living things, cats can get sick from time to time regardless of what they do.

As a cat owner, you will need to make sure that you only feed your cat the best.  Premium cat food is ideal for cats, as the food is designed to keep your pet happy and healthy.  You will also need to pay attention to his behavior, so you know when he is sick and when to take him to the vet.  Most of the most common illnesses and diseases are minor, although there are some instances where a veterinarian can be the deciding factor between life and death for your cat.

Your cat's behavior will be one of the most important factors when you are trying to determine whether or not he is suffering from the weather.  Slow acting, turning around all the time, lack of energy and not eating are all signs that he should take him to the vet right away.  His coat is also a good thing to watch, too.  If you notice that his coat is dull and patchy or notice that it is shedding abnormally, you should contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Diarrhea and vomiting are sometimes common, even with the underlying disease.  On the other hand, if your cat appears to be doing either of the Mondays for more than a day, you should contact your veterinarian.  Coughing is also common, just because coughing will remove hairballs.  If your cat appears to be coughing for another reason, you should get him checked as soon as possible.

To ensure that your cat is not exposed to various diseases, you must always ensure that he stays up to date with vaccinations.  There are many diseases that require vaccinations, including rabies and feline disease.  Feline disease is one of the most devastating diseases that can afflict cats, yet it is also one of the easiest diseases to prevent.  The disease strikes cats very quickly, leaving you little time to seek treatment.

Feline leukemia is another very deadly disease, yet it can be prevented early with appropriate vaccinations.  Although the disease cannot be infected with humans, it can spread quickly between cats.  There are vaccines that can cure the disease these days, although you will still be careful not to expose other cats around a cat you know has feline leukemia.

Another very common problem with cats that stay outdoors is worms.  Cats infected with worms usually have a dull coat and little or no appetite.  There are several different types of worms, including ringworm and hookworm.  Worms can come from fleas, lice, or even dead organs of ferrets that cats eat.  Usually, the cat digests the eggs that later mature and stick to the intestinal walls.  If you frequently feed your cat garlic while feeding, this may help protect him from worms.

If you care for your cat, you will likely keep it healthy for years to come.  You should always make sure he gets good food, and not miss any scheduled checks with your vet.  If he gets the appropriate vaccinations when asked to get them, he must be safe from many pests and diseases.  Taking the appropriate steps with your cat now will prevent anything from happening in the future
